Back from Desktop Summit 2011

Back from Berlin already 2 weeks, and it's time to make a report about this desktop summit 2011.

I arrived at Friday in Berlin and took part in the Pre-Registration in c-base, and the interesting thing was that the first time in my life I drink an open source beer. :D.

And from the first 3-days presentations, I enjoyed a lot of topic, "GNOME: The state of the Union", "Network and Location Awareness in Your Application", "Theming GTK+ 3 widgets with CSS", "Ramblings of a retired release manager", "GNOME a continent, starting from Asia." and ....
And the most impressive one is the "Hitler is briefed about GNOME 3", the GNOME people are genius.

It was very relax and happy to take part in the Beach Party(Sponsored by Intel), Island Party(Sponsored by Collabora), and Football(Sponsored by SUSE). In the football, I was in the Pink Team.

In BoFs, I attend the "On D-Bus" and "NetworkMgr & ModemMgr", from here I know about the latest feature of NM and MM, and met with upstream maintainer, Dan Williams and the knetworkmanager developer, Lamarque Vieira Souza. It's a little pity that the time is very short, and we are the last BoF, after that the classroom will be closed, and we don't have enough time to ask more questions.

Here again met with a lot of friends, Andreas, Bruno, Scott Revees, Vincent Untz, Michael Meeks, and also met many new friends, Brian Cameron and Larmarque.

openSUSE向中国发送的2000DVD光盘终于拿到了，GLUG组织了这次活动，为了演示，深入的研究了两天感觉GNOME3.0用起来更加舒服了。

大家反馈了GNOME3.0的设计的一些意见，比如界面上面的面板空闲的太多，当活动窗口特别多时，Dash面板中的图标会变得太小，ibus输入法无法使用。

在Novell北京的office举办的发布派对，社区来了大约30人。童鞋们拿出心爱的本子进行现场安装，喝着可乐吃着pizza，拿着有奖问答的小礼品（白板上的绿色小蜥蜴），11.4就已经装好了。

It's my first time to attend the GUADEC 2010, the Hague was awesome. Here I met a lot of passion and great contributors, put their faces to names. And I knew about the latest status of Shell, Clutter and GNOME 3.

And I gave a lightening talk in the last day which is 30th July. The topic is "How to let NetworkManager more security?", it's not a big deal, just tell the new comer how to use the PolicyKit let application more security. You can get more detail from here .

I also took part in the the beach BBQ party on Thursday at Scheveningen, which is organized by Collabora. The food was very delicious, here I played the table football and talked freely with everyone you liked. It's very nice!

This morning had meeting with Dirk and Anja from German, they took a haribo snacks for us.
From the wikipedia I knew about it's a very famous confectionery producer.

Haribo (pronounced /ˈhærɪboʊ/ HARR-i-boh) is a very popular and well-known confectionery producer, founded in 1920 in Germany by Hans Riegel Sr. The company headquarters are in Bonn and the name is an acronym for Hans Riegel, Bonn.

After Hans Riegel Sr. died during World War II, his son, also named Hans Riegel, took over the company. Haribo expanded its operations taking over many local sweet manufacturers in countries all over the world.

Today, Haribo is the biggest manufacturer of gummy and jelly sweets in the world.

MURPHY'S LAWS

1. Nothing is as easy as it looks.
2. Everything takes longer than you think.
3. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
4. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. Corollary: If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then.
5. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.
6. If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.
7. Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.
8. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
9. Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.
10. Mother nature is a ***.
11. It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.
12. Whenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first.
13. Every solution breeds new problems.

时常觉得做事不顺，本来挺简单的事情后来总遇些麻烦问题，于是在琢磨为什么每次都这样倒霉；墨菲定律（Murphy’s Law）对于解决这种心理困惑或许算一剂好药。这个定律的命名缘于美国一位名叫墨菲的上尉，他认为他的某位同事是个倒霉蛋，于是不经意说了句笑话：“如果一件事情有可能被弄糟，让他去做就一定会弄糟。”

后来这句话被迅速流传，经过多年演变，这一“定律”逐渐进入习语范畴，其内涵被赋予无穷的创意，出现了众多的变体 ——“如果坏事有可能发生，不管这种可能性多么小，它总会发生，并引起最大可能的损失”、“If anything can go wrong, it will.(会出错的，终将会出错)”、“笑一笑，明天未必比今天好”、“东西越好，越不中用”、“别试图教猪唱歌，这样不但不会有结果，还会惹猪不高兴!”等等。。。

墨菲定律的原话是这样说的：
If there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it. （如果有多种方式去做某件事，其中一种将导致不好的结果，那么必定会有人按这种方式去做。）

根据“墨菲定律”，我们得出下列常用推论：

* 一、任何事都没有表面看起来那么简单；
* 二、所有的事都会比你预计的时间长；
* 三、会出错的事总会出错；
* 四、如果你担心某种情况发生，那么它就更有可能发生。

我们都有这样的体会，如果在街上准备拦一辆车去赴一个时间紧迫的约会，你会发现街上所有的出租车不是有客就是根本不搭理你，而当你不需要租车的时候，却发现有很多空车在你周围游弋，只待你的一扬手，车随时就停在你的面前。如果一个月前在浴室打碎镜子，尽管仔细检查和冲刷，也不敢光着脚走路，等过了一段时间确定没有危险了，不幸的事还是照样发生，你还是被碎玻璃扎了脚。如果你把一片干面包掉在你的新地毯上，它两面都可能着地。但你把一片一面涂有果酱的面包掉在新地毯上，常常是有果酱的那面朝下。

墨菲定律告诉我们，容易犯错误是人类与生俱来的弱点，不论科技多发达，事故都会发生。而且我们解决问题的手段越高明，面临的麻烦就越严重。所以，我们在事前应该是尽可能想得周到、全面一些，如果真的发生不幸或者损失，就笑着应对吧，关键在于总结所犯的错误，而不是企图掩盖它。

2003年美国“哥伦比亚”号航天飞机即将返回地面时，在美国得克萨斯州中部地区上空解体，机上6名美国宇航员以及首位进入太空的以色列宇航员拉蒙全部遇难。“哥伦比亚”号航天飞机失事也印证了墨菲定律。如此复杂的系统是一定要出事的，不是今天，就是明天，合情合理。一次事故之后，人们总是要积极寻找事故原因，以防止下一次事故，这是人的一般理性都能够理解的，否则，或者从此放弃航天事业，或者听任下一次事故再次发生，这都不是一个国家能够接受的结果。

人永远也不可能成为上帝，当你妄自尊大时，“墨菲定律”会叫你知道厉害；相反，如果你承认自己的无知，“墨菲定律”会帮助你做得更严密些。

这其实是概率在起作用，人算不如天算，如老话说的“上的山多终遇虎”、“福无双至，祸不单行 ”亦是如此。还比如彩票，连着几期没大奖，最后必定滚出一个千万大奖来，灾祸发生的概率虽然也很小，但累积到一定程度，也会从最薄弱环节爆发。所以关键是要平时清扫死角，消除不安全隐患，降低事故概率。

现实中总是怕什么却来什么，好的状态是只想着技术要领，忘掉自己的现状。

Translating plan for opensuse wiki

Now http://cn.opensuse.org/ is the Simplified Chinese version of http://en.opensuse.org/, a lot of volunteers and fans of OpenSUSE translated many of pages. But there are a lot of problem:

a) Quality
One word could be translate several different Chinese character by different people. And when someone translated one page, no others revise it.

b) Updating
When the pages in English updated, we couldn't follow it. And it's also hard to find what page in Chinese is correspond with the page in English.

And I've translated some pages in Ubuntu, I found it's very good. There are a standard procedure for translating, that include how to participate to translate, translating standard, and award for translating, such as if you translate one page they would open a blog for you.

So I have an idea for translating OpenSUSE.

Add a translate plan in Welcome page, deleting the indexed plan.
Add Procedure page, Require-> Translate -> Revision.
Add a WaitforTranslating category, port article from English pages in en.opensuse.org.
Add a WaitforRevising category, so than some and easier to find what pages need to be revised.
Add Translating Standard page.
Add wiki basic syntax page, it's for beginners.
Add an translating team page, so that listing all translator.

Today we met Jared and Calvin, came from Provo.

First day, they talked about the AB, and I understood the relationship between AB and PDB clearly.

And preparing try to submit sth in AB, I found that there were still have some problem:
How decide to submit a tar ball or a patch for the changes?
How decide to change the version of package?
Does the AB changes the *.changes automatically?

After 5 months' hard work on the bug 273360, it's resolved on 29 Oct. And Jaimon send me a Breakaway Award for my perseverance and dedication. :) And indeed I also learn all the system of ipsec-tools clearly from troubleshooting procedure. Nice!

After half Marathon, I'm so tired, after 15 km, I walk occasionally, when arrive at destination I even can't stand and walk. Luckly I found a fruit shop at a WanShouShi and take a lot of fruit, banana, watermelon, and grape, then drink a tin of beverage. And feel so delighted and renew my energy again!

And my mother took a mini-marathon(4 km) at first time, she also had a good day!

Now the openSUSE 10.3 Alpha5 released, let's take a look of 10.3 roadmap. It's translated into Chinese.
Last night my laptop in Ubuntu 7.04 always don't response, it has already lasted long time. Maybe it caused by the 3D desktop.
Now I use SUSE Linux for work, it's very good, so I decide to install openSUSE at my laptop.
